CloudHSM

CloudHSM is a cloud-based service that provides access to dedicated hardware security module (HSM) instances hosted within a cloud provider's data centers. Unlike shared or multi-tenant key management services, CloudHSM gives each customer exclusive access to a tamper-resistant HSM appliance, ensuring that cryptographic keys are stored and managed in a single-tenant hardware environment that meets the highest security and compliance standards.

Cloud HSM services, such as AWS CloudHSM, provide FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validated hardware that supports a wide range of cryptographic operations including key generation, encryption, decryption, digital signing, and hashing. Customers retain full control over their cryptographic keys, and the cloud provider has no access to the key material stored within the HSM instances.

For healthcare applications, CloudHSM enables organizations to implement high-security digital signature solutions without the operational overhead of managing physical HSM hardware on-premises. The service provides high availability through automatic failover across multiple availability zones, and it scales to meet the throughput demands of high-volume signing operations such as electronic prescribing.
